Even Santa wears a mask.
Even though Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, assured children Santa Claus received a COVID-19 vaccine, Santa wanted to model proper mask-wearing during the Kerby Elementary School holiday car parade Dec. 22, sponsored by the Kerby PTO.
Santa and his driver, Kerby Principal Walter Fitzpatrick, led the way on a parade route along each street in the Kerby district. They were followed by teachers in cars decorated with balloons, garlands and other holiday accessories, several displaying their students’ names. Teachers played Christmas music and honked their horns to herald their arrival.
“Mr. Fitzpatrick knows everybody. Somehow he got Santa from the North Pole,” said parade observer Dan Roeske, a former Cougar parent and Kerby neighbor.
Fitzpatrick made frequent stops along the way so Santa could wave and give a jolly “Ho ho ho.”
“A couple of kids, their jaws just dropped,” Roeske said. “Mr. Fitzpatrick said the best reason to do this for Christmas was to see their faces.”
According to a spokesperson from the North Pole, “Santa missed being able to go to Kerby to Santa’s Attic, so he didn’t want to miss the opportunity to say Merry Christmas to all of his Cougar friends.”

“While this year has provided many challenges for both students and staff alike, we committed early on to ensuring that music would continue within our community despite all of the obstacles standing in our way,” said Chris Takis, South band director.
Said Tom Torrento, North band director, “Whether it was socially distanced outdoor rehearsals or Zoom-based classes, we knew our students in Grosse Pointe would be willing to get to work and create something beautiful in the midst of tragedy and chaos.”
“In a world of division, music can be a unifying and healing power,” Takis added.
